The History of Nicholson Plastics
Origins in Lanark – Nicholson Plastics was established in Lanark, a town known for its strong agricultural ties. The company evolved from a family-owned tanning business led by Alan Nicholson, a master tanner. The experience in handling the demanding tanning process laid the foundation for the company’s expertise in composite materials.
Transition to GRP Manufacturing – The company’s initial interest in GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) emerged from the necessity to line timber vats and pits used in tanning with glass fiber. This innovation sparked Alan Nicholson’s vision to pivot the business entirely towards GRP manufacturing, leading to the creation of Nicholson Plastics in 1968.
Expansion and Growth – Located near the petrochemical refinery in Grangemouth, Nicholson Plastics had easy access to raw materials, which facilitated its production of GRP products like bath panels and garden ponds. By the 1970s, the company had secured significant contracts, including the Glasgow Housing Corporation for one-piece cold water storage tanks, addressing the city’s water pressure issues.
Major Milestones for Nicholson Plastics
New Facilities and Expansions – In 1972, Nicholson Plastics moved to a larger facility in Kirkfieldbank, Lanark, previously a sandstone weaving factory. This relocation allowed the company to meet growing demand. In 1976, the company expanded its reach by appointing a sales representative in London and opening a sales and distribution depot in Croydon by 1980. By the mid-1980s, Nicholson Plastics had established a national presence across the UK.
Ownership Changes – Despite its success, the company faced challenges, including the early retirement of Alan Nicholson due to ill health. In 1991, the company was sold to Welsh venture capitalists Hicking Pentecost, followed by another sale to Coats Viyella in 1999. Later that year, the company was acquired by Killarney Plastics, now known as Tricel.
Recent Developments – Nicholson Plastics continued to grow under Tricel’s ownership, purchasing 240m² offices in Croydon in 2009, solidifying its operational base.

- One Piece Tanks: Available in standard sizes up to 16,000 litres, with custom options.
- Sectional Tanks: Suitable for areas with restricted access, ideal for both domestic and industrial use.
- Custom Moulded Products: Includes non-water GRP products like housings and enclosures.
