THE CHALLENGE
Navigating expansion – Thomas Tunnock
Thomas Tunnock Limited needed a 130000 litre sectional tank that fit within their restricted floor space while maintaining full capacity. The existing 8x6x3m tank had to be replaced, but expansion works required a reduction of approximately three meters in floor space. This presented a challenge: how to maintain the required capacity while freeing up space for new construction.
TRICEL SOLUTION
With space constraints in mind, our engineers proposed building upwards instead of outwards. The new 130000 litre sectional tank measured 6.5m in length, 5m in width, and 4m in height. By switching the length and width dimensions, we allowed Tunnock’s to demolish three existing piers, creating essential room for their expansion.
Once the old tank was removed, our team installed the new 6.5x5x4m sectional tank, complete with a ball valve box to maximize capacity. Since the tank was already elevated on piers and secondary support steels, the working height reached 5 meters. Our engineers ensured that enough clearance remained after installing the supports.
Due to the large tank footprint, we recommended a side access hatch and two internal ladders for easier maintenance. Optimizing available space without sacrificing storage capacity is our specialty, especially in urban developments where every square meter counts.
