Opened in 1990 on the site of a former steelworks, Meadowhall shopping centre covers 1.4 million square feet and features 230 stores, including both independent and international brands. It also offers 50 eateries and an 11-screen cinema. However, the centre faced challenges in enhancing building management to boost energy efficiency, water conservation, and recycling.

THE CHALLENGE
TRICEL SOLUTION | Shopping center tank install
In 2015, Meadowhall became the first UK retail property to earn BREEAM Excellence In-Use for building management, thanks to its efforts in cutting energy use, saving water, and maximizing recycling.
Tricel Weston’s Technical Sales Engineer visited Meadowhall twice before the upgrade to assess the current water storage tanks. Working with the Consulting Engineer, they scoped the project’s requirements, leading to the design and implementation of a comprehensive solution.
The upgrade involved installing six water storage tanks. Three tanks used harvested greywater for toilets and urinals, providing a non-potable water supply, while the remaining three supplied potable water for domestic services. All tanks were the same size and capacity. Our engineers recommended glass reinforced plastic (GRP) tanks due to their strength, durability, ease of transport, and ability to withstand harsh conditions, offering a long lifespan.

After site assessments, our Technical Sales Engineers worked with consultants to provide cost-effective water storage solutions.
A phased delivery and installation program minimized disruption to Meadowhall’s customers while ensuring constant water supply. The tanks were ordered on May 5, 2016, and the project completed by May 19, 2017, upgrading the water storage system.
