THE CHALLENGE

The Meadowhall shopping centre, constructed in 1990 on the site of an old steelworks, spans 1.4 million square feet and houses 230 stores from both independent and international brands. The shopping center also incorporates 50 eateries and restaurants, along with an 11-screen cinema. One of the challenges faced by Meadowhall was the need to improve its building management for increased efficiency in energy consumption, water conservation, and recycling.

TRICEL SOLUTION

Meadowhall became the first UK retail property to be rated BREEAM Excellence In-Use for building management in 2015 for efficiency in the management of cutting energy, saving water and recycling as much as possible.  This achievement was driven by efforts to enhance energy efficiency, water usage reduction, and recycling practices.

Dewey Waters Technical Sales Engineer visited the Meadowhall shopping centre on two occasions prior to the upgrade works to assess and review the current water storage tanks in use and worked alongside the Consulting Engineer to scope the requirements of the project. Their collaboration led to the design and implementation of a comprehensive solution.

Upgrade works were undertaken, involving the installation of six water storage tanks. Three of these sectional tanks utilised harvested greywater specifically for toilets and urinals, constituting a non-potable water supply. The remaining three tanks were intended for domestic services and potable water applications. These tanks were all of the same size and capacity. Additionally, our engineers recommend glass reinforced plastic (GRP) tanks due to their high strength capabilities, durability, ease of transport and can be assembled onsite. GRP tanks have a long-life span and withstand the harshest climate conditions.

THE FINAL RESULT

After the site assessments, our Technical Sales Engineers worked closely with our clients Mechanical & Electrical consultants to ensure the water storage options provided the customer with the most cost-effective compliant solutions that would fit within the existing plant rooms.

There was an agreed phased program for the delivery and installation of the tanks to suit the shopping centre requirements. Minimal disruption to customers and staff at the Meadowhall Shopping Centre was a priority, ensuring a constant water supply for all potable and non-potable services. The tanks were ordered on May 5, 2016, and the project reached completion on May 19, 2017. The result was an upgraded water storage infrastructure that aligned with the shopping center’s requirements for efficient water supply and management.

Our water tank solutions and tank assembly team are fully certified and have over 60 years combined knowledge and experience, manufacturing and supplying water storage solutions for potable and no potable applications across all industries and sectors.
